February is quickly becoming the most wonderful time of the year for Canada Goose and NBA fans. Last year, the Canadian luxury outerwear company and the National Basketball League kicked off the inaugural year of their multi-year partnership by announcing a collection with RUDE. This year’s designer, Salehe Bembury (@salehebembury), is best known as an American shoe designer, working with luxury brands such as Versace, Yeezy and Cole Haan.

“The NBA has had a big impact on my interest in design,” Bembury told us in a recent interview. “Growing up, watching games with my dad and loving everything about ’90s basketball culture, from the ’94 Knicks to Space Jam and The Fresh Prince,” Bembury said. “The 90s was a time of fashion exploration, and that ethos is what I believe Canada Goose, the NBA and I captured with this collection.”

Bembury designed a genderless four-piece collection which includes a great take on the Canada Goose classic Expedition Parkawith trim around the hood that seems to keep out the cold and dust (but seriously, the overstated chenille hood trim looks great).

The complete collection

Expedition Parka: Bembury has transformed the coat developed for scientists working in extreme weather conditions into a bold and stylish urban jacket. The vest is removable.

Signal vest: It’s always a good sign to see the Signal Vest on the streets, as it’s a classic transitional weather piece that signals warmer days.

Tundra Bib: This style inherited from Canada Goose is ready to give your lower half all the warmth that your upper body usually sports in winter. Bembury’s design would look great on the Rockies or even sledding hills.

Q: What has been the most rewarding aspect of designing the Canada Goose-NBA 2022 collection?

A: Collaboration is a huge source of personal inspiration for me and working with brands who are passionate about what they do is very rewarding.

Growing up in New York, there was always one or a few core brands for specific items sitting on a spectrum of value and prestige. Canada Goose has always been one of those staples, one that communicates quality and prioritizes function.

Coming from an industrial design background and spending much of my time outdoors, it’s important that what I use and/or design performs to the highest standard. Canada Goose and I share this belief and the three brands (Salehe Bembury, NBA and Canada Goose) intersect on using the “craft” to solve problems.

I use my design ability to consistently educate, give back and create products that bring joy to people. Canada Goose uses its long heritage of quality and function to solve cold weather environments. The NBA uses the abilities of its athletes to give back and enrich communities around the world. None of these initiatives would be possible without the basis of each entity’s “business”.

Q: Can you tell us about your creative process when designing this collection?

A: Sharing my relationship with the outdoors, I unwittingly sparked a conversation and created a community during a time when we were physically stagnant due to the pandemic. The outdoors has become a place of comfort for those near and far. When a product can motivate someone to do, go, or play, the product achieves exponential value. The collection has been curated to speak to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts and also inspire a new community of curious minds to get out there with this product.

I was thrilled to reimagine some of Canada Goose’s iconic pieces through my lens while honoring the craftsmanship that made these quirky styles so coveted. In selecting the pieces for the collection, I thought about style choices around the world, for example, the Los Angeles climate can demand anything from a shirt, a hoodie or a thick jacket. This change in temperature can occur from location or time of day. Often, one item of clothing is not enough for a full day in Los Angeles. The Expedition Parka’s removable vest and Tundra bib’s adjustable legs meet this need for customization for all-day wearability. Each of the four unisex pieces has been designed to be layered, mixed and matched, so the wearer can truly create a unique expression for themselves and their surroundings.

The intention of the capsule is that the local Canada Goose consumer will find it familiar, while the new consumer will be instantly informed of Canada Goose’s heritage.

Q: The collection is said to be inspired by the basketball culture of the 90s. What are the specific elements of the collection that pay homage to this inspiration?

The 90s were a time of fashion exploration. Developing this, each player brought a unique perspective to the table that was influenced by their childhood, their region, their team.

What had not been seen before by a mass audience became a fashion in its own right, more precisely “NBA fashion”. Bold patterns, competing materials, layered looks and confident branding were all there. For example, Charles Oakley was often spotted in puffy jackets while Karl Malone was seen in cowboy hats. Each player has composed a beautiful juxtaposition of style with no rules.

A: Hiking

Q: If you could spend an hour with one designer from all over history, who would it be?

A: Alexander McQueen

Q: What three words come to mind when you think of Canada?
